Inside a recent THC drinks vs. alcohol study
In February of this year, researchers at the University of Buffalo released a study that reached a fascinating conclusion: weed drinks can potentially help people drink less alcohol. They believe that the familiarity of holding a canned beverage at social events can make cannabis an easier substitute, noting that drinking these beverages may be a useful form of harm reduction.
In the study, those who drank cannabis beverages reported cutting down their weekly alcohol intake in half. They also reported less binge drinking. Nearly two-thirds of the respondents reported that they reduced or fully stopped drinking alcohol after switching to cannabis drinks.
“Several previous studies, including ours, have demonstrated that people have reduced their alcohol consumption by switching to cannabis,” said Daniel Kruger, PhD, a paper co-author and research associate professor. “It’s remarkable that people who use cannabis beverages report an even greater reduction in alcohol use than those who use other types of cannabis products (but not beverages). We believe this may be because of the similarity in administration method and context of use — people at parties or bars will likely have a drink in their hand, in this case a cannabis beverage rather than an alcoholic one.”

If you’re swapping weed drinks for alcohol, don’t expect an exact one-to-one experience until you’ve figured out what works best for you. While many cannabis drinks are fast-acting now, they are unlikely to immediately impact you the way alcohol does. We recommend starting low and taking it slow, especially when trying new products.
As with drinking, make sure you have a safe ride home when drinking cannabis beverages. It’s not legal (or safe) to drive under the influence of cannabis. Likewise, use your best judgment when consuming in public spaces, as it’s not legal to consume cannabis in public, either.
