The most agreed upon origin comes from the early ‘70s when a group of California stoners who would gather to smoke a joint after school and extra curricular activities – at 4:20 p.m. The term quickly became code for smoking weed.
One of the students had a connection to a close friend of a member of the Grateful Dead, where their slang took off. By the early ‘90s, a group of Dead Heads handed out fliers telling people to “meet at 4:20 on 4/20 for 420-ing.” The flier ended up getting published in High Times.
Regardless of the origin, 420 has become an iconic number representing all things weed. On April 20 every year, dispensaries offer 420 deals and discounts as part of the celebration.
