Considering Cannabis for Sleep? Here’s What You Should Know
Trouble sleeping? You’re not alone. Nearly 70 million U.S. adults deal with poor sleep quality, with roughly 1 in 5 adults regularly using a sleep aid. Outside of prescription sleep aids, many people try dietary supplements like melatonin, magnesium, and l-theanine to improve their nightly sleep.
If you’re considering cannabis for sleep, you should know that specific cannabinoids (chemical compounds in cannabis that interact with different receptors in the body) like CBN and CBD are especially useful, low doses of THC may help, and edibles, tinctures, and smokeable items are the most common consumption methods when using cannabis for sleep. There are also important risk factors to consider, too, such as potential sleep disruptions or next-day grogginess.
We’ll go over the ins and outs of using cannabis for sleep in this blog. We’ll also cover the best cannabis sleep products in Costa Mesa so you can try it out for yourself and see if your sleep improves.
Recent research on cannabis for sleep
Researchers recently published a cannabis sleep study in the Journal of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. They conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of cannabis for insomnia and found that the strongest evidence for improvement came from cannabinol (CBN), cannabidiol (CBD), and combinations of CBN and CBD. They found that these products were helpful in reducing sleep disturbance, increasing sleep time, and reducing daytime sleepiness.
Formulations with THC landed mixed results, leading researchers to conclude that CBD and CBN-focused sleep products are likely more beneficial for sleep quality improvement.
In a recently published survey from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, one-third (33%) of adults reported improved sleep from cannabis use. Around 19% said they noticed no difference using cannabis for sleep, while another 8% said cannabis made their sleep worse. (The other 47% of respondents were not cannabis users.)
How does cannabis help with sleep?
Researchers believe that cannabis may help some people sleep by increasing the amount of adenosine–a sleep-promoting neurotransmitter–in your brain.
But it’s also suggested that cannabis helps with sleep by simply improving other factors that hinder it.
For example, many people with PTSD use cannabis to reduce their nightmares and allow for more restful sleep. And one study found that cannabis may improve restless leg syndrome, another cause of poor sleep quality.
Another research paper looked at the current knowledge on cannabinoids for anxiety and sleep disturbances. Researchers concluded that cannabis (CBD in particular) may improve anxiety and sleep disturbances.
They noted that future research will need to address doses and include standardized methodologies to better understand the role of cannabis for sleep. So while we need more definitive data, we know that the current evidence points to cannabis helping with anxiety-related sleep issues. Given sleep is often impacted with many anxiety disorders, this is promising information for many.
Why CBN for sleep is a popular option
Of the many cannabinoids present in cannabis, CBN is one of the more popular options for improving sleep. Short for cannabinol, CBN is a mildly psychoactive cannabinoid that interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. While it generally doesn’t make users high, it can potentially cause drowsy, sedative effects that improve sleep.
Most CBN products on the market are made in combination with CBD, THC, or both. These blends are typically made to leverage the “entourage effect,” a well-accepted theory that cannabinoids work best when in synergy with one another.
